We thought we would pose a few questions to our Health, Nutrition and Fitness Consultant Hannah Lloyd to find out her top tips for leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
How did you become a registered nutritionist and personal trainer?
I have always tried to lead and pursue a healthy, active lifestyle and am very passionate about helping other people to do the same. I have spent many years travelling around the world and whilst doing so I tried to maintain a healthy lifestyle, (which isn’t easy when travelling around!).
My experiences helped me to gain perspective on a path I wanted to pursue further. When I returned from my travels I decided to take my passion further and embarked on a personal training degree at the University of Wales Trinity St David in Carmarthen. After two years of that and qualifying as a Level 3 Personal Trainer I decided to focus my final year of my degree and specialise in Nutrition where I finished with a first class honours degree. I am now awaiting accreditation on the Association for Nutrition (AFN) register.
What do you enjoy about nutrition and fitness?
The feeling of wellbeing! Feeling healthy every day when you wake up!
I have always enjoyed playing a variety of sports and generally keeping fit and have a passion for training and sports-specific fitness.
The importance of nutrition has grown with me along this journey. I believe that a change in lifestyle (hence the name!) allows people to lead a healthy, happy and wholesome life. We have a choice of how we nourish our body and we have a choice in whether we keep ourselves fit. There is a lot of confusing and misleading information out there, and I want to help people overcome this and create a healthy life for themselves.
What do you enjoy about your work?
I love meeting new people and helping them to achieve things they never thought possible and shape their lives for the future. My aim is to help my clients to improve their nutritional habits and improving fitness levels and goals.
The world of nutrition and fitness is constantly evolving and progressing. I love studying the area and I aim to constantly keep up-to-date with current research to make sure I provide my clients with the best research-based information and services I possibly can.
I aim to create a safe space for my client, helping them through challenges and barriers to good nutrition and exercise. I have gained a lot of experience dealing with these matters that many clients face (barriers to exercise and good nutrition) and I strive to help my clients overcome these. I have taken part in research within nutrition and studied in depth about issues people may face and feel I can truly make a difference to my client’s lifestyles.
I have had a lot of experience through an organisational setting, but now I am progressing to new experiences within the private sector. The main thing I enjoy about my work is helping other people. If I can help at least one person improve their quality of life, then my job is done.
What nutritional and fitness services do you offer?
I offer a range of different services from general nutritional advice and guidance to longer term solutions. I offer an initial consultation to meet my client and for us to get to know one another and for me to understand my client’s individual needs and goals. From the initial consultation we will work together to tailor a unique plan.
The services I offer range from nutritional help, including general nutrition advice and guidance, dietary analysis packages, full nutrition plans to fitness and training. I offer 1-2-1 and small group personal training sessions and weight management programmes (coming soon!) and I also specialise in exercise and nutrition for pregnant and post-natal women.
What happens during a typical consultation?
Each client will attend an initial consultation. This consists of me getting to know my client, understanding their background history and their individual nutrition and fitness goals.
From the initial consultation each client will have unique requirements and needs, and so from here on out the services I offer will be decided upon between me and the client as each programme will be tailored to the individual. This may include dietary analysis alone or may involve a longer term solution involving meal planning and follow up consultations. It is difficult to clarify what each consultation will involve as each consultation is specifically adapted for each individual’s needs.
Give 3 top tips for leading an active and healthy lifestyle?
Ok, where to start?! Eat better, become more active!
1) Be mindful of what you choose to nourish your body with. Eat nutritious calories, eat the rainbow. Make sure your diet consists of a variety of colour, not all beige!
2) Drink more water. Over 60% of our body is made up of water. Water is absolutely essential for our bodies to function.
3) Exercise, exercise, exercise! Our bodies were designed to move and to be active. In today’s modern world, many of us lead very sedentary lifestyles and this can be detrimental to our health, both present and particularly in the future. Exercise and nutrition go hand-in-hand.
What’s next for you?
I am constantly looking to broaden my horizons and become more knowledgeable within my field of work. I have courses coming up for various things, including Counterweight, which will allow me to run year-long individual and group, weight management programmes to help people gain control of their exercise and nutrition habits and lead them on the right path for the future.
I also love to surf, and another journey I would like to embark on is surf-
specific fitness. I am planning on travelling to the US to qualify as a surfset instructor in order to teach surfset fitness classes in the UK. Watch this space?!
